Celebrating Labor Day in Indiana

Labor Day allows us all to enjoy one last long holiday weekend before summer is officially over. Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, as well as numerous other companies and businesses, will be closed for Labor Day on Monday, September 1. However, you still have the option to find an agent and get a quote on our website.

History of Labor Day

Labor Day is a tradition dating back to 1894, when it became an official federal holiday. The commemorative day is a tribute to many achievements, long hours and tough days of America’s workers. Visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s website for more information on the history of Labor Day.

Labor Day gives many people the first Monday of September off from work— and since schools are also closed for Labor Day, kids in elementary, middle, high school and college can also enjoy the long weekend. Not only is it a day off from the constant grind of emails, meetings, tasks and projects, but it is an opportunity to enjoy the last warm days of summer as we move toward the beginning of fall.

How to celebrate Labor Day

Many people celebrate Labor Day by taking additional vacation days to go on a trip. Whether you plan to hit the beach, camp at a state park or explore a new city, it’s never too early to start planning. If you’re an Indiana Farm Bureau member, don’t forget that your membership can save you money on hotels, rental cars, attractions and much more. Visit the My Member Deals page to log in and learn more!

If you just want an activity to do on Labor Day, you can visit one of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance’s community partners--the Indianapolis Zoo. The Indianapolis Zoo is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Labor Day. During your visit, you can check out elephants, dolphins, orangutans and many other animals. Visit the Indianapolis Zoo website to buy your tickets and plan your visit.

If you live near one of Indiana’s water parks, make a splash this Labor Day by taking the whole family to enjoy the fun. Most water parks remain open until Labor Day, but you’ll want to double check before you commit to visiting. Check out our guide to Indiana water parks to learn more and make a plan.

Staying at home for Labor Day this year? Consider firing up the grill and inviting family and friends over for a cookout! Get your favorite lawn games out of storage and enjoy the time outside.  If you do host a cookout at home, make sure to abide by these grill safety tips to keep you and your family safe.

If you are fortunate enough to get the day off this Labor Day, make it relaxing and fun—whether that means reading your favorite book, sitting by the pool, cooking a fun meal or checking out one of Indiana’s many attractions. Maybe even think about taking a few days of vacation time to enjoy some alone time or time with the family, too. We hope you fill this Labor Day and the second half of this year with unforgettable memories and adventures!
