Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance is back for its third annual Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance Day at the Indiana State Fair on Saturday, July 29!
Instead of a presence in the Farm Bureau Building on the north side of the fairgrounds, we will have a huge presence on State Fair Boulevard, including activities for kids and adults, insurance agents to answer any questions, giveaways, information, a prize wheel and, most excitedly, a grand sweepstakes!
Ready, Set, Mow!
During the month of July, we are hosting a sweepstakes called Ready, Set, Mow! Each Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance agency in the state will give away a DeWalt 20X20V MAX brushless, cordless push lawn mower. That means there are 24 chances to win!

When is the Indiana State Fair?
The 2023 Indiana State Fair will take place from Friday, July 28 to Sunday, August 20. This year’s 2023 Indiana State Fair partners with Pacers Sports & Entertainment to celebrate two Indiana icons: basketball and the State Fair. As we know, Indiana is “the state that grew the game.”
The 2023 Indiana State Fair provides 18 fun-filled days. Come for your favorite fair food, see the animals, ride the rides and learn about Indiana’s rich agricultural and basketball history. Once again this year, the Fair will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
History of the Indiana State Fair
In 1851, the Indiana General Assembly passed a law that was, “An act for the encouragement of Agriculture.” This law created the State Board of Agriculture whose primary goal was to host the first Indiana State Fair. The first Fair took place in 1852 at Camp Sullivan, now known as Military Park. Indiana was only the sixth state in the nation to hold an annual state agricultural exposition.
The State Fair was also held in Lafayette, Madison, New Albany, Fort Wayne and Terre Haute before it was centrally located to Indianapolis in the area that is now the Herron-Morton Place neighborhood.
By the late 1800s, the Fair had outgrown its location and moved to its current location on 38th Street. The Indiana State Fairgrounds & Event Center opened in 1892 and has hosted more than 115 Indiana State Fairs.
The State Fair has been held every year since 1852, except 1861 because the Indiana State Fairgrounds were being used for military purposes during the Civil War, and in 2020 when it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During World War II, the fairgrounds were again requisitioned for the military and were under Army Air Forces use, therefore the 1942-1944 Fairs were scaled back to 4-H competitions only.
Top tips for attending the Indiana State Fair
- The Fair takes place in July and August, which means it will be hot and sunny! Remember to bring sunscreen and water for you, your family and your friends.
- The Indiana Farm Bureau Fall Creek Pavilion is complete and open this year. Be sure to come visit.
- The Fair hosts a variety of free concerts at the Hoosier Lottery Grandstand. From Clint Black to the Gin Blossoms to Peppa Pig Live! and the crowd-favorite Happy Together tour, there’s a concert for everyone.
- Don’t forget to see the beloved attractions like the giant cheese sculpture and the world’s largest boar.
- To go with this year’s theme there will be interactive experiences, including All-Star Court (a Basketball Amusement Park), the Pacers Sports & Entertainment Court, exhibits paying homage to Indiana’s rich basketball legacy, and daily storytelling moments – 18 of Indiana’s greatest basketball stories told through the 18 days of the Fair, team player meet & greets, and so much more
- You don’t usually think of otters when you think of the Fair, but this year come see these adorable animals put on a show in the MHS Family Fun Park August 2-20 at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
- And finally, the Fairgrounds are 250 acres of non-stop fun—be sure to wear comfortable shoes.
