What is considered a work zone?

 

A work zone is an area where roadwork is taking place. These work zones may include lane closures, detours and moving equipment. Before entering a work zone, you will see precautionary signage on the road. These signs alert drivers that they need to slow down, drive with caution, and pay close attention while driving through the approaching work zone.  

 

Risky behaviors to avoid while driving through work zones

 

You should not speed when driving through a work zone in Indiana. Speed limits are reduced in work zones, and drivers may become impatient or careless, which results in driving above the posted speed limit. But the speed limit reduction has been put in place to keep workers and drivers safe. When you’re in a work zone, you may encounter a new traffic pattern, construction equipment or other unexpected obstacles. The reduced speed limit in work zones is in place give you time to react and adjust to changes.

Work zone speed limits in Indiana

 

Depending on where the work zone is located, the speed limit may be significantly reduced. Before entering a work zone, notice what the posted speed limit is in the work zone. Abide by the law and do not exceed that speed. 

 

Penalties for driving dangerously through a work zone in Indiana 

 

According to IN.gov, there are extreme penalties for driving infractions within work zones. Those penalties are outlined in Indiana’s Work Zone Safety Law. Depending on the number of citations an individual receives, here is a list of the penalties:  

 

  1. For those caught speeding in a work zone for the first time, the penalty results in a $300 fine.  

  1. The second offense for speeding in a work zone increases to a $500 penalty.  

  1. The third offense for speeding in a work zone within a three-year period includes a $1,000 fine.  

  1. Drivers who operate vehicles recklessly and/or aggressively through a work zone face fines of up to $5,000.  

  1. Drivers who injure or kill a construction worker could be fined $10,000 and face up to six years in jail.  

 

INDOT emphasizes the need to be safe in work zones

 

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) stresses the need for safety measures to keep drivers, passengers and work zone employees safe.  

 

INDOT states that it is drivers’ civic duty to practice safe driving in work zone areas to keep everyone as safe as possible. According to INDOT, there were 33 fatalities and 1,750 injuries in Indiana work zones in 2023 alone. The most common cases noted by police included following too closely, driver inattention, unsafe speed, and unsafe lane movement, among others.
