Farm Safety

At Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, our dedication to farmers and the farming community is unmatched. A part of Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance's commitment to Indiana farmers is providing you with the tools necessary to provide a safe working environment for yourself and your family.

Please continue to refer to this farm safety section as we add new farm safety programs and advice on how you can limit problems and increase your output.

Agriculture has always been dangerous. The National Safety Council consistently ranks agriculture as one of the three most hazardous occupations in the United States. A recent survey by the USDA's National Agriculture Statistics Service showed 200,000 work-related injuries occurred on U.S. farms, annually. Farm family members accounted for 65 percent of those injuries.

Farmers expect to come close to experiencing a serious injury sometime during their lives. For every serious agricultural injury, the victim will have experienced 10 close calls and 30 cases of personal property damage.
The success of all types of agriculture is tied to the level of safety on the farm. This good measure of farm safety is one of the few things that can ensure a sustainable future for Indiana agriculture, and protect Hoosiers who enter the field of agriculture every day.

Beginning in 2010, Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance will begin a Fire Extinguisher Program as part of the new Farm Safety Program.

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance will assist members in protecting farm equipment and agricultural buildings from loss by fire by providing, at no cost to the eligible client, one 10-pound ABC fire extinguisher for each farm insured by Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance. Beginning immediately, and over the next few years, eligible farm clients will be contacted by Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance Farm/Crop/Commercial Specialists scheduling the installation of the fire extinguisher. Members are entitled to one recharged 10-pound ABC fire extinguisher if the one already issued is used to extinguish a fire.

Eligible farm equipment and buildings:

  • Self-propelled grain combines and high-risk farm buildings - such as farm shops, livestock confinement buildings, etc.
If your fire extinguisher is used to extinguish a fire, please return the used fire extinguisher to your county Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance office. We will also replace any fire extinguisher unit found to be defective.

If you have any questions about this program, please contact Lisa Smith, Farm/Crop/Commercial Administrator at (317) 692-7406.
